inThe “Fab Five” made there way on to the court in the early 90’s and not only dominated basketball but shocked the world. Five freshmen started for the Michigan basketball team in a time where one freshman starter was uncommon non-the less five. These five players came from very different backgrounds but their culture and the way they played was as if they had grown up in the same back yard.
The Five were different from most teams not only in appearance but also in play because they felt they had something to prove. They walked out to play in baggy shorts, long black socks, and black shoes at a time where white socks and short thigh hugging basketball shorts were accepted.
These five made put their mark on the colligate basketball world. They were tough, smack talking, basketball players where were not afraid of ridicule or hardship. They spoke differently, they played differently, and they looked differently. They took very much after the hip-hop culture of the early 90’s.
Judged by outsiders as an undisciplined and unkempt, the world, and many alumni of Michigan were very upset with the situation. Letters of disapproval and disappointment poured in day after day but the Five continued to win.
The Five won the final four together twice but never won a championship. After the team lost the second championship many of the five began to commit to the NBA draft and the team was soon dissolved.
Although the player went their separate ways their legend and what they stood for lives on. As you hear them speak about that time in their lives you can hear commonalities in what they say. They loved one another; they loved basketball and used it as a stage to express themselves. They went through hard things together and had goals they worked towards as a unit. They were everything a coach could ask for. We never saw anything like them and we may never again see anything like them.
